Saul's Sight

Helping The Blind See

Jehovah

First I’d like to look at where the name Jehovah came from. When writing ancient Hebrew, they didn’t write vowels. This causes us to not be fully certain of the pronunciation of certain words. This is especially difficult with the name YHWH. There are many different pronunciations of this name. Many parts of the pronunciation of this word are up for debate, such as whether the W should be pronounced as a V sound, or whether the vowels we use while pronouncing this name should be borrowed from the word Adonai or Elohim. Most Christians believe the name is pronounced Yahweh. Jehovah is mainly used in the King James version of the Bible, and by Jehovah’s Witnesses. Jehovah’s witnesses really stress the use of the name Jehovah, to the point of saying that the use of any other name is borderline idolatry or heresy. All that being said, the pronunciation of the name YHWH isn’t crucial to the Christian faith, so it isn’t worth arguing over.
