Saul's Sight

Helping The Blind See

Two Views

There are two main ways people view the topic of women pastors. The first is the view that women can have no authority over a man, and therefore cannot be a pastor. Then there is the view that women are allowed to be pastors. I’ll get into both of these views and why people believe them.

The main argument for women not being pastors is linked to a verse in 1 Timothy. 1 Timothy 2:11 says “A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet.” This verse seems to clearly state that a woman should remain quiet in church, and they are especially not allowed to teach to men. I’d argue though, that we are missing some very important context in this verse. I’ll get into that later. Another point they often make is that men are almost always the ones shown in power in the church. Throughout the entire Bible we see very few stories of God using women compared to the ones of God using men.

The second view often uses context of the time and culture to argue their point. I explain the context and culture in the page listed below. Another good point on this side is talking about the immense need for salvation in our world. I’ve heard it explained like this: if there was a pool and many people were drowning, we wouldn’t tell well trained swimmers they couldn’t help save people solely because they are women. It’s the same with people drowning in sin. There are so many people who need saving, and we need everyone we can get to help save them. Why would God not allow a woman to help save someone? He just wants all His children to return to Him, I doubt He cares who leads them home.
