Saul's Sight

Helping The Blind See

Context of the Language

Now I think that if we are going to look at the verse 1 Timothy 2:11 it’s important that we also look at the context. First, I’d like to bring up translations. 1 Timothy 2:11 says  “A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet.” If we look at the original Greek word used for “woman” in this verse it translates to “Gune”. While this word can be used for single women, it is most often used for married women. This would make more sense, because before this verse we never see implications that women should submit to all men. When talking about a woman submitting it is always used within the context of marriage. If we look at the verse assuming that he did mean a wife the verse seems to make more sense. “A wife should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a wife to have authority over her husband; she must be quiet.”
