Saul's Sight

Helping The Blind See

Total Depravity

The first point of Calvinism is total depravity. This is the idea that after the fall all of humanity was tainted, including our mind, will, emotions, and body. This means that we cannot be saved by our own will and we need divine intervention through God. This idea is backed up by Romans 3:10-12 which says: “As it is written: ‘There is no one righteous, not even one. There is no one who understands; no one who seeks God. All have turned away; they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.’” and Psalm 51:5 highlights how we were sinful from birth. “Surely I was brought forth in iniquity; I was sinful when my mother conceived me.” These verses seem to tell us that we are so wicked we cannot come to God on our own.

Most believe that humanity is tainted by sin. Where the conflict comes in is where they say that humans are so wicked that they cannot come to God on their own. Even after the fall, we were still made in the image of God. That means that we still have reason, love, and the ability to do moral good, even if all of those things are tainted. There’s also the argument of if we are unable to come to God without His intervention, how can we justly be held accountable for failing to do so when He doesn’t intercede? Of course, I believe that no matter what God does He is so much more just and sovereign then we could know, but I don’t believe that the idea of total depravity aligns with His character.
