There are many instances where the gospels record Jesus casting out demons, but I chose A few main accounts to go over. The first is the demon possessed man, Legion, which can be found in Matthew 8:28-34; Mark 5: 1-20; and Luke 8: 26-39.
All of the accounts are fairly consistent. There is a demon possessed man living in the tombs. He sees Jesus and is afraid, and then Jesus casts the demons into some nearby pigs. There is one minor detail that Matthew has that the others don’t though. Matthew says that there were two demon possessed men instead of just one. I don’t know why the other authors didn’t mention the other man, but it’s not a big problem, since they might have just not found it necessary to include that detail.
I also would like to mention the effect the demons had on this man. The passages talk about how he would cry out and cut himself with stones. So the demons caused this man to hurt himself against his will.
InĀ all three passages, the demons claim that their name is Legion because there are many of them. The word Legion refers to the largest unit of the Roman army. The idea that someone can be possessed by multiple demons is also shown with the story of Mary Magdalene, who was possessed by seven demons.
AnotherĀ major point that I think this story shows us is Jesus’ power over demons. As soon as the demon possessed man saw Jesus he started shouting and begging Jesus not to torture them, but to have mercy on them. Lastly, id like to point out that the pigs that Jesus cast the demons into were considered unclean animals. Jews weren’t aloud to eat or even touch them, and I think that there is significance in the fact that the demons were cast into such an animal.
