Helping The Blind See

Performance in Prayer

Performative prayer is a huge thing within the culture of two faced Christianity, and it always has been. Jesus clarifies the motive of praying in Matthew 6:5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret.”

In Luke 18 Jesus tells a parable that reveals that the posture of your heart is what matters most. He talks about two people praying at the temple, a pharisee and a tax collector. For context, tax collectors were very looked down upon by the Jews. They were viewed as traitors, since they worked for the Romans and they often stole a bit of extra tax for themselves. The Pharisee prays loudly, thanking God that he isn’t as sinful as the tax collector. He brags about his righteousness, but it’s all for show. Meanwhile, the tax collector simply says “God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” Jesus praises the tax collector of all people, saying “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” This shows just how much Jesus values the posture of your heart, not all the things you do publicly.
