Helping The Blind See

Performative Worship

As a worship leader in my church, I personally have had to deal with being intentional in not being performative in my worship. It can be really easy (especially as a leader in worship) to forget the purpose of singing these songs, and to get caught up in yourself. We worship to thank and praise God for all He has done, and to cry out to Him in hard times. Worship leaders need to remember that our job is to lead others into deeper worship, not give a “good performance”.

Depending on your church or denomination, you will see many different ways people express themselves in worship. At my first church it was rare to see someone raise a hand in worship. At my new church I was seeing people go on their knees, or jumping around during worship. It definitely was a shock to me. I remember first considering whether it was good or not to express yourself so boldly in worship. Isn’t it just bringing more attention to yourself? Paul tells us not to be disruptive in the church. And while yes, in some cases you need to be able to read the room, I don’t think that it’s all bad. A good rule to have is this: if you don’t worship like that in private, then you shouldn’t in public. It’s a good way to ensure that you aren’t doing it for attention, and that’s just how you express yourself in worship.
