Helping The Blind See

Unconditional Election

Unconditional election states that God chooses certain people for salvation solely on His mercy and nothing the person does. This means that humans are totally dependent on God for salvation and we don’t have the ability to choose it. Ephesians 1:4 “even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love” This verse says that God chose us before the Earth was even created. He chose us not because of anything we have done or could do, but because of His sovereign choice and will.

Although there are verses that seemingly support unconditional election, there are equally as many which seem to say the opposite. Take 1 Timothy 2:3-4 “This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth” This tells us that God does want all people to come to Him, so why wouldn’t He give them all the opportunity to come to Him? Then we have 2 Peter 3:9 “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” This is very similar to 1 Timothy 2 in saying that God does not desire anyone to be apart from Him.

Either way, God is merciful to people who have sinned and He is good in His forgiveness.
